In a symbolic gesture at the Presidential Villa, Vice-President Kashim Shettima handed over the reins of his office to teenager Joy Ogah for one day, highlighting the federal government’s commitment to promoting girl-child education and gender inclusivity. In a statement issued by the Office of the Vice President today, staged in conjunction with Plan International, coincided with the International Day of the Girl-Child and provided Ogah the opportunity to address national officials and advocacy partners.
During the takeover, Joy Ogah called for inclusive and safe education for every child in Nigeria, emphasising the urgent need for free sanitary products, improved water and sanitation in schools, and the protection of girls’ rights. She notably drew attention to the country’s estimated 10.5 million out-of-school children, over 60 percent of whom she said are girls, and urged sustained policy action beyond a one-day event.
