50 Soldiers Killed in Militant Attack on Burkina Faso Military Base

About 50 soldiers were killed on Monday when suspected militants from Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) launched a deadly assault on a military base in Dargo, northern Burkina Faso.

Local sources told the Associated Press (AP) that nearly 100 attackers overran the base, looted supplies, and set the facility on fire.

While the military is yet to release an official statement, the attack shows further proof of the worsening security crisis in the country, where armed groups now dominate vast rural areas.

The violence has since led to two coups since 2022, and despite efforts by interim President Ibrahim Traoré to regain control, extremist threats continue to escalate.
