FG Sets Up Committee to Reform NYSC

The Federal Government has inaugurated a committee to reform the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), aiming to make it more relevant to national development and better suited to the needs of Nigerian youths.

This follows rising concerns about corps members’ safety, poor infrastructure, and questions about the scheme’s relevance in today’s economy.

At the inauguration today in Abuja, the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, noted that despite these challenges, the NYSC remains vital to national unity and youth empowerment.

He said the committee would review existing policies, engage stakeholders nationwide, and recommend reforms that align the scheme with Nigeria’s broader development goals.

The Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, announced plans to establish a Teachers’ Corps and a Medical Corps to serve rural areas, targeting NCE graduates and healthcare workers.

He said these initiatives would address gaps in education and healthcare while creating employment pathways.

Also speaking at the event, Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, Hadiza Usman, stressed the importance of expanding technical and vocational training to help young Nigerians contribute meaningfully to national growth.
