FG Unveils National Standards for Auto Gas, Electric Vehicle Maintenance

The Federal Government has unveiled new National Occupational Standards for the conversion, calibration, and maintenance of Auto Gas-powered vehicles, as well as for electric vehicle servicing and maintenance.

Unveiling the standards in Abuja, Minister of State for Industry, Senator John Enoh, stressed the importance of the guidelines in preventing safety risks within the auto sector. He noted that although Nigeria’s gas reserves surpass its oil reserves, proper regulation is crucial for converting vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

Senator Enoh said the new standards will help ensure safe and consistent practices across the country, while also developing skilled manpower to meet global benchmarks in the automotive industry.

Also speaking at the event, the Director General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council, Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin, noted that the standards will help upgrade technicians’ skills and ensure uniform service quality nationwide.

He added that with the growing number of hybrid vehicles using both CNG and electric power, training technicians to handle the systems is vital. Osanipin revealed that the new guide also outlines safety protocols, engine assessments, and the proper installation of fuel components—all to be handled by certified personnel.
