Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky has disclosed that he has approved a draft bill aimed at protecting the independence of the country’s anti-corruption agencies.
The move follows days of nationwide protests over recent changes that appeared to weaken the oversight bodies, sparking public outcry and concerns from the European Union.
According to reports, President Zelensky announced that the new bill would guarantee the rule of law, ensure the independence of anti-graft agencies, and protect Ukraine’s legal system from Russian interference.
Recall that Ukraine witnessed its largest street protests earlier this week since the war began in 2022, with thousands rallying against a law that placed two key anti-corruption bodies, NABU and SAPO under the control of the prosecutor general, who was appointed by the President.
It would be recalled that the controversial measure was swiftly passed and signed into law by Zelensky, triggering backlash from citizens and Ukraine’s international partners.
