Oyo State Government Declares Zero Tolerance For Illegal Migration Through Desert In Oyo, Launches Youth Empowerment Scheme

The Oyo State Government says it is taking firm steps to curb illegal migration and end the state’s role as a source, destination, or transit route for irregular migration, popularly referred to as Japa through the desert.

Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Migration and Homeland Security, retired Assistant Comptroller General Segun Adegoke, gave the assurance in Ibadan while briefing journalists after the maiden meeting of the Oyo State Reintegration Committee.

Adegoke stated that the committee has been tasked with handling all issues related to reintegration, illegal migration prevention, and public awareness on the dangers of irregular migration routes.

Adegoke also revealed that the Makinde administration has approved 10,000 hectares of land in Iganna, Itesiwaju Local Government Area, for a Youth Empowerment and Reintegration Project.

He said the project was implemented in collaboration with the National Centre for Migration Policy and the European Union, and will be coordinated by the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons.

According to Adegoke, the initiative will train young beneficiaries in mechanised farming and agribusiness. It also includes funding support and access to markets — creating a full value chain aimed at discouraging illegal migration by offering meaningful opportunities at home.
