Global Tsunami Alerts Eased After Russia Quake Triggers Evacuations

The first waves from a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula reached Hawaii on Tuesday, with a 4-foot wave recorded off Oahu.

The quake, among the strongest in modern history, prompted widespread tsunami warnings and evacuations across Hawaii, parts of the US west coast, Japan, and the South Pacific.

Hawaii Governor Josh Green urged residents to stay calm, while President Donald Trump advised vigilance.

Nearly two million people were evacuated in Japan, where a 4.3-foot wave struck Iwate Prefecture.

Alerts were also issued in Indonesia, where authorities in Papua warned coastal residents to move to higher ground.

Similar warnings extended to the Philippines, Guam, Canada’s British Columbia, and South Pacific islands including Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu.

However, many alerts have since been downgraded or lifted, with Hawaii’s warning reduced to an advisory and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center declaring no further threat to Guam and nearby islands.
