President Tinubu Mourns Doyin Abiola, Hails Her as Icon of Journalism and Democracy

President Bola Tinubu has mourned the passing of veteran journalist and former Managing Director of the Concord Group, Dr Doyinsola Abiola, who died at the age of 82.

In a statement issued by the State House, the President described her as a trailblazer who shattered gender barriers in journalism and played a vital role in the nation’s democratic journey.

He noted that she began her career at Daily Sketch in 1969 and went on to become the first woman to edit a national newspaper, later serving as the Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of all Concord titles.

President Tinubu highlighted her pivotal role during the 1993 presidential election won by her husband, the late Chief MKO Abiola, and commended her active involvement in the fight for democracy following its annulment.

He said her leadership in the media space and her unwavering demand for justice even after the military sealed Concord Group offices proved her to be a true “soldier of democracy.”

The President praised her integrity, commitment to excellence, and dedication to public good, while extending his condolences to her family and the governments of Lagos and Ogun States.
