First US Deportees Arrive in Rwanda Under Migration Deal

Rwanda has confirmed the arrival of seven migrants deported from the United States under a new resettlement agreement.

Government spokesperson Yolande Makolo said the group, which landed in mid-August, had been vetted before relocation.

According to her, three of the migrants indicated interest in returning to their home countries, while the remaining four plan to stay and rebuild their lives in Rwanda.

Authorities did not disclose their nationalities but noted that the new arrivals are being housed by an international organisation, with oversight from the International Organisation on Migration and Rwandan social services.

The agreement allows Rwanda to receive up to 250 migrants from the US, with Kigali reserving the right to approve each case.

Rwanda, which previously entered but later lost a similar deal with the UK, has said it accepted the US arrangement out of solidarity, citing its own history of displacement.

While the government promises training, healthcare, and housing for deportees, President Paul Kagame led administration continues to face accusations of human rights abuses and political repression.
