Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk has confirmed that a huge number of Russian drones violated Polish airspace overnight during strikes on western Ukraine, marking the first time the country’s forces have shot down drones over its territory.
The incursion prompted an emergency military operation involving Polish and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) aircraft, with most airports now reopened.
Russia has not yet responded to the allegations.
The drones were part of Moscow’s latest large-scale assault on Ukraine, which saw 415 launched in a single night.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said at least eight of the drones were directed toward Poland, warning that the incident set an extremely dangerous precedent for Europe
