ASUU Protests Loan Scheme, Demands Release of Withheld Salaries

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, today, staged nationwide protests, rejecting the Federal Government’s proposed loan scheme for lecturers and demanding payment of outstanding entitlements.

At the University of Jos, ASUU branch chairman Joseph Molwus described the scheme as a “poison chalice,” insisting lecturers do not need loans but the release of their withheld salaries and arrears. Similar protests were held at the University of Lagos, University of Benin, Federal University Gusau, and Federal University Dutse.

The union is demanding the release of three and a half months of withheld salaries from the 2020 strike, payment of 25 to 35 months promotion and wage arrears, outstanding academic allowances, and revitalization funds.

ASUU warned that failure to address these issues and fully implement the 2009 FG-ASUU agreement could trigger another nationwide strike, urging President Tinubu to act quickly to avert a shutdown of universities.
