Champions League, Haaland Brace Falls Short as Monaco Hold Man City

Manchester City were held to a 2-2 draw by Monaco in a dramatic Champions League clash yesterday, as a last-minute penalty converted by Eric Dier cancelled out a first-half brace from Erling Haaland.

The Norwegian striker scored twice, including a clever lob after breaking free of the defence and a close-range header to take his Champions League tally to 52 goals in 50 appearances, briefly putting the defending champions on course for a second group-stage win.

Monaco responded through a powerful long-range strike by Jordan Teze, and despite City’s dominance, were handed a lifeline in the 90th minute when a VAR review resulted in a penalty for a high boot by Nico Gonzalez on Dier.

Dier calmly converted the spot-kick past Gianluigi Donnarumma to secure Monaco’s first point of the campaign, while City moved to four points from two matches following their earlier win over Napoli.

The match was the first meeting between the sides since their dramatic 2017 encounter, and featured former Monaco player Bernardo Silva captaining City, while Paul Pogba watched from the stands as he continues recovery ahead of his debut for the Ligue 1 side.
