The Federal Government has launched the Nigeria Strategic Directions for Nursing and Midwifery (NSDNM) 2025–2030, a national framework aimed at transforming nursing and midwifery education, leadership, and service delivery.
At the launch in Abuja, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, described the plan as a transformative blueprint that outlines clear priorities for strengthening education, creating dignified career pathways, expanding leadership roles, and retaining skilled professionals.
He noted that President Bola Tinubu had demonstrated strong support for the profession, with recent expansions in training capacity increasing enrolment quotas from 28,000 to 115,000 for the 2025 academic year.
Pate also highlighted that over 69,000 frontline health workers had been retrained and that more than 20,000 new recruits, 60% of whom are nurses and midwives, have been approved.
Stakeholders including the Director of Hospital Services, Dr. Jimoh Salaudeen, and World Health Organization representative, Dr. Mary Brantuo, described the strategy as a milestone in Nigeria’s healthcare development.
