Manchester United crashed out of the Carabao Cup in stunning fashion, losing 12–11 on penalties to League Two side Grimsby Town after a 2–2 draw at Blundell Park.
The hosts took a shock two-goal lead at half-time through Charles Vernam and ex-United academy player Tyrell Warren, before late goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire forced extra time and penalties.
Grimsby manager Dave Artell described the result as one of the proudest moments in the club’s history, while United boss Ruben Amorim admitted his side had paid the price for a poor first half despite a spirited fightback.
The match unfolded in torrential rain as Grimsby’s Darragh Burns and Cameron Gardner unsettled United’s defence. Andre Onana’s errors contributed to both first-half goals, but Amorim’s half-time substitutions sparked a revival, with Bruno Fernandes and Mbeumo leading the charge.
After a tense shootout, Mbeumo, who had earlier scored hit the crossbar with his second spot-kick, sealing a famous victory for the Mariners.
Jubilant home fans celebrated wildly as Grimsby advanced to the third round, while United were left to face mounting scrutiny after another humbling cup exit.
