Japan Envoy Returns to U.S. to Push for President Trump Tariff Deal Executive Order

Japan’s tariff envoy, Ryosei Akazawa, has resumed his mission to Washington, pressing U.S. President Donald Trump to sign an executive order formalising the July trade agreement that would reduce tariffs to 15 per cent. The envoy had previously cancelled his trip, citing the need for further technical discussions. At Tokyo’s airport, Akazawa emphasised the urgency of amending reciprocal tariffs particularly on automobiles and parts to safeguard economic security and growth for both nations.

Late July’s deal also included a pledge by Japan to invest up to $550 billion in the U.S., but formal implementation has been delayed amid uncertainties especially concerns about tariffs being “stacked” on top of existing duties. Japan has sought clarification and amendments to the presidential order to ensure the agreed 15 per cent rate isn’t layered over other import levies.
