Young protesters in Madagascar have condemned President Colonel Michael Randrianirina’s appointment of businessman Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo as the country’s new prime minister, describing the move as a betrayal of their push for change.
Rajaonarivelo, a prominent figure in the nation’s financial sector, replaces Ruphin Zafisambo, who was appointed just two weeks ago by ousted president Andry Rajoelina.
Leaders of the youth protest movement said the decision was made without consultation and goes against the spirit of renewal demanded by citizens during weeks of demonstrations over power and water shortages.
They accused the new administration of recycling old political practices and vowed to continue mobilising until their calls for genuine reform are met.
