Maurice Kamto Appeals Election Ban Amid Fears of Unrest in Cameroon

Cameroonian opposition leader Maurice Kamto has filed an appeal with the Constitutional Council, challenging his disqualification from the October presidential election.

Kamto, who was the main opposition contender in 2018, was barred last week by the electoral commission, Elecam, on the grounds that his party, Manidem, had already submitted a different candidate for the 2025 race.

Supporters of Kamto argue the decision is politically motivated, noting that other parties have been allowed to field multiple candidates without sanction.

Kamto is considered the strongest challenger to 92-year-old President Paul Biya, who has been in power since 1982.

The UN has warned that excluding candidates from the ballot could trigger public protests, particularly in the capital, Yaoundé.
