Oyo Government Reaffirms Commitment to Building People-Centred Smart Cities

The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to developing inclusive and technology-driven smart cities through the Oyo State New Towns and Cities Development Authority (OYNTCDA). Speaking at the 2025 World Cities Day commemoration in Ibadan, the Executive Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde, Mrs. Mofoluke Adebiyi, said the initiative aligns with the state’s urban renewal agenda, which focuses on innovation, inclusiveness, and sustainability. She noted that projects such as the Ilu-Tuntun Smart City and the Ibadan Circular Road Corridor reflect the government’s vision to modernize urban living while promoting community participation and equitable development.

Adebiyi emphasized that smart cities must combine technological progress with human-centered planning, adding that the state is leveraging Geographic Information Systems and digital tools to enhance governance and land management. She revealed that Oyo State is aligning with the UN-Habitat’s 2026–2029 Strategic Plan to strengthen housing and basic services, describing the effort as a path toward sustainable urban growth. Other speakers, including Architect Olufemi Oyenekan and OYNTCDA Executive Secretary Seun Raji, commended the initiative as a transformative step toward making Oyo State a model for livable, innovative, and inclusive cities in Africa.
