Police Suspend Enforcement of Tinted Glass Permit Nationwide

A Federal High Court in Warri, Delta State has ordered the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector-General of Police to suspend enforcement of the tinted-glass permit requirement for vehicle owners. The interim order, issued Friday in Suit No. FHC/WR/CS/103/2025, requires authorities to maintain the status quo and respect judicial processes, while the substantive case is heard.

The suit was brought by lawyer John Aikpokpo-Martins, who is challenging the legality of the renewed enforcement policy, arguing that it is unconstitutional and places an unreasonable burden on motorists. Meanwhile the Police have maintained that the Motor Vehicles , Prohibition of Tinted Glass, Act empowers them to issue permits where there is good cause, such as security or health needs.

The tinted glass permit regulation was due to be strictly enforced from October 2, 2025, after prior grace periods, but this court ruling pauses enforcement nationwide until further order. Motorists are currently not required to produce valid tinted glass permits until the legal issues surrounding the policy are resolved.
