The Presidency has defended President Bola Tinubu’s recent cash rewards and national honours to the Super Falcons following their historic victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described the move as a celebration of excellence, hard work, and the undying Nigerian spirit.
Recall that President Tinubu yesterday announced the Naira equivalent of 100 thousand dollars for each player and 50 thousand dollars for each coach, amounting to over ₦4.5 billion in total. Each squad member also received a three-bedroom apartment and the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger.
While many praised the President’s move, especially for promoting women’s sports, some online users raised concerns over its timing and economic implications.
Onanuga, however, insisted the reward reflects the government’s commitment to recognising merit and inspiring future achievements.
