South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has described his visit to the White House as a “great success” despite a tense moment with U.S. President Donald Trump over unfounded claims of genocide against white farmers in South Africa.
Ramaphosa said the meeting achieved its goal of resetting U.S.-South Africa relations by focusing on investment, trade, and diplomatic re-engagement.
He told reporters that while the confrontation drew headlines, the broader objectives of the visit were met.
During the meeting, Trump confronted Ramaphosa with debunked allegations and even played a video in a darkened Oval Office to underscore his point.
Ramaphosa dismissed the claims, suggesting Trump was merely uncertain about the situation.
He later downplayed the incident, noting that follow-up discussions over lunch centered on trade, investment, and even golf.
Reflecting on the overall engagement, Ramaphosa said both countries were committed to continued dialogue and joked that those expecting drama may have been disappointed.
