Ramaphosa to Meet Trump Amid Rising US-South Africa Tensions

The South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, is scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump at the White House on May 21, 2025, amid increasingly strained relations between the two nations.

According to a statement from Ramaphosa’s office, the leaders will discuss bilateral, regional, and global issues, with the visit aimed at resetting their strategic relationship.

Tensions have escalated following the US decision to resettle a group of white Afrikaners, citing alleged persecution in South Africa claims Pretoria has strongly rejected as politically motivated and misleading.

The Trump administration has criticized several South African policies, including its stance against Israel at the International Court of Justice and a controversial land reform law.

Meanwhile, Deputy President Paul Mashatile dismissed Trump’s claims of genocide, stating that South Africans of all races live and work together peacefully.
