Somali Forces Foil Prison Attack, Kill Seven al-Shabab Militants

Somali security forces have killed seven al-Shabab militants who attacked the high-security Godka Jilacow prison in Mogadishu on Saturday night.

The government confirmed that all the attackers were neutralized after a six-hour siege at the facility, which is operated by the National Intelligence and Security Agency and located near the presidential palace.

Witnesses said they fled the area as explosions and gunfire erupted, while an ambulance operator reported that nearly 25 people were taken to hospitals, though the number of casualties among security personnel remains unclear.

Authorities said the militants, disguised as soldiers, attempted to free imprisoned members of the group but failed, as no inmates escaped during the assault.

The attack came just hours after the government lifted long-standing roadblocks in the capital.

The African Union Support and Stabilization Mission condemned the incident, describing it as a cowardly act showing al-Shabab’s disregard for human life and efforts to undermine Somalia’s security progress.
