SSANU threatens industrial action over delayed payment of salaries

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has raised alarm over continued delays in the payment of members’ salaries, attributing the issue to their recent migration to the Government Integrated Financial and Management Information System (GIFMIS).

In a letter dated May 7, 2025, addressed to the Accountant General of the Federation, SSANU President, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, expressed frustration over what he described as discriminatory treatment, noting that university workers now receive salaries up to two weeks later than other federal employees.

He reminded the government that such delays violate the 2022 agreement reached after a prolonged strike, which guaranteed non-victimisation of union members.

The union, which also copied the Minister of Education, Minister of Labour and Employment, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), warned that the persistent delay is eroding the morale of university staff and threatening industrial harmony.

SSANU called for immediate intervention to align salary payments with the federal schedule, stressing that any further delay may trigger actions to defend the rights and dignity of its members.
