Sudanese Refugees Begin Journey Home as Egypt Offers Free Train Rides

Hundreds of Sudanese refugees gathered at Cairo’s main train station yesterday to board free trains back to Khartoum, recently reclaimed by Sudan’s Armed Forces from the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The Egyptian government launched the initiative to support voluntary returns as parts of the capital begin rebuilding after months of violent conflict.

The war, which broke out in April 2023 between the military and the RSF, has killed more than 40,000 people and triggered one of the world’s worst displacement crises.

Meanwhile, over 1.5 million Sudanese having fled to Egypt, officials say the free transport aims to ease the burden on host communities while helping those willing to return to their recovering homeland.
