Teachers Renew Calls for Better Welfare, Full Implementation of 65-Year Retirement Policy

Teachers across Nigeria have renewed their demand for improved welfare, better working conditions, and full implementation of the 65-year retirement age policy as the nation marked the 2025 World Teachers’ Day yesterday.

At various events nationwide, teachers’ unions and education stakeholders criticised the slow pace of policy implementation, poor remuneration, and lack of teaching facilities, which they said continued to affect the quality of education.

According to the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), 16 states are yet to implement the retirement policy signed into law in April 2022 by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Speaking during the celebrations, NUT National President, Comrade Audu Amba, urged governments at all levels to invest more in teachers and increase budgetary allocation to education.

State governors, including those of Oyo, Ogun, Katsina, Gombe, and Ekiti, lauded teachers for their dedication and pledged continued support through improved welfare, recruitment, and training.

Meanwhile, NUT officials in states such as Kwara and Sokoto called on governments to implement pending allowances and harmonised retirement benefits.
