Two Nigerians have been arrested in Libya for allegedly trafficking hard drugs, including hashish and hallucinogenic substances, in commercial quantities. The arrests were made by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Zliten, a town in Libya, after a tip-off from Migrant Rescue Watch, a migrant monitoring group. The substances were found ready for distribution, and the suspects both described as undocumented migrants were handed over to the appropriate legal authorities for further investigation and prosecution.
The report said the two individuals were referred to Libya’s Anti-Narcotics Agency, which is expected to question them and press formal charges. This case adds to several recent incidents involving Nigerians abroad being detained in Libya on drug-trafficking allegations, which observers say are damaging to Nigeria’s international image.
