WAEC Denies Restricting Subject Choices for 2026 WASSCE

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has denied reports that it issued directives limiting subject choices for students applying for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates. In a statement issued today by its Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adeshina, the council described the circulating information as “false and unfounded,” stressing that it did not instruct students to offer specific subject combinations.

WAEC emphasised that the development and regulation of curricula are the sole responsibility of the Federal Government of Nigeria, through relevant education agencies, and that the council’s function is limited to assessing candidates based on approved policies. It urged students, parents, and schools to rely only on official communications from WAEC and disregard misleading reports about subject restrictions for the 2026 WASSCE.
