WAEC Releases 2025 WASSCE Results, Records Sharp Drop in Performance

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.

The Council announced that candidates can now access their results online at [waecdirect.org](http://waecdirect.org).

At a press briefing in Lagos, WAEC’s Nigeria National Office head, Dr. Amos Dangut, described the exam as a “huge success” despite challenges, noting that 38.32% of candidates earned five credits including English and Mathematics a significant drop from 72.12% in 2024.

Out of 1,969,313 candidates who sat for the exam, only 754,545 met the minimum benchmark, with WAEC attributing the decline to a new anti-cheating strategy that serialised objective test papers in core subjects.

While essay performance remained steady, objective scores dropped. WAEC disclosed that 192,089 results (9.75%) are being withheld over malpractice, and 451,796 results are still being processed. The Council also announced plans to fully transition to computer-based testing by 2026, after introducing the option in this year’s exam.
