FG Reaffirms Commitment to Free Press, Warns Against Misinformation

The Federal Government has restated its commitment to maintaining a free, responsible, and vibrant press, while recognising the media’s critical role in strengthening democracy and driving national development.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, gave the assurance during the unveiling of  Nigeria Media Renaissance Perspectives on Online Publishing in Abuja, commending the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) for promoting ethical and innovative journalism.

Idris emphasised the President Tinubu administration’s resolve to uphold press freedom based on truth, fairness, and accountability.

He highlighted ongoing efforts to work collaboratively with the media to enhance standards, combat misinformation, and promote national unity.

Meanwhile, The minister also revealed that a UNESCO backed Media and Information Literacy Institute will open in Abuja by November 2025 to advance fact-checking and media professionalism.
