Carney to Be Sworn In as Canada’s Prime Minister Amid Trade Tensions

Former Canadian central banker, Mark Carney, is set to be sworn in as Canada’s next prime minister tomorrow morning, along with his cabinet, according to an announcement from the governor general’s office yesterday.

The newly elected Liberal leader had assured Canadians of a smooth and swift transition as he replaces Justin Trudeau, who stepped down in January after nearly a decade in power.

At 59, Carney is new to politics but secured a landslide victory in the Liberal Party leadership race, winning 86 percent of over 150,000 votes cast.

Carney’s entry into politics comes at a time of heightened trade tensions with the United States.

During his victory speech, he expressed confidence in Canada’s trade strength, comparing it to the country’s prowess in hockey.

He later stated yesterday that he was prepared to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump to renegotiate a trade agreement and prevent further economic disputes.

His comments follow the recent imposition of a 25 percent tariff on steel and aluminum imports by the U.S., which prompted Canada to respond with retaliatory tariffs.
