China Calls for Cooperation Amidst Trade Tensions

China has reiterated its stance that both Beijing and Washington should address economic and trade disputes with a cooperative and positive approach, according to commerce ministry spokeswoman He Yongqian.

She emphasized that dialogue and consultation must be grounded in mutual respect, equality, and mutual benefit.

She further noted that using threats and intimidation would be counterproductive and expressed hope that both nations would work together to resolve their issues through discussions.

The ongoing trade tensions escalated after US President Donald Trump, since his return to office in January, increased tariffs on key trading partners, including China, Canada, and Mexico.

Citing concerns over fentanyl-related substances, Trump raised an existing 10-percent blanket tariff on Chinese imports to 20 percent this month.

In response, Beijing imposed tariffs of up to 15 percent on American agricultural products such as soybeans, pork, and chicken.

Additionally, China, the world’s leading steel producer, pledged to take all necessary measures to safeguard its interests against new US tariffs on steel and aluminum.
