House of Representatives Moves to Remove Immunity for Vice President, Governors

The House of Representatives has passed a constitutional amendment bill for second reading to strip the vice president, governors, and their deputies of immunity from prosecution.

Sponsored by Solomon Bob, the bill seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to curb corruption, eradicate impunity, and enhance accountability in public office.

Section 308 of the Constitution currently shields these officials from both criminal and civil prosecution while in office.

Additionally, the House advanced a bill to assign constitutional roles to traditional rulers and considered 42 bills related to devolution of power, state creation, citizenship, local government administration, and fundamental rights.

House spokesman Akintunde Rotimi explained that the broad passage of bills was intended to ensure their inclusion in a zonal public hearing for Nigerians’ input.

Another bill was passed for second reading to decentralize natural resource governance, transferring control over mines, mineral resources, oil fields, and natural gas from the Exclusive to the Concurrent list.
