Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has described the country’s democratic tradition as a stabilising force in West Africa, calling it a model for others amid rising political instability across the subregion.
In a Democracy Day statement released by his spokesperson, Alkasim Abdulkadir, Tuggar said Nigeria has remained committed to democratic principles citing regular elections, peaceful transitions of power, and constitutional governance despite a wave of military coups in neighbouring countries.
He said Nigeria continues to serve as a beacon of hope at a time when democracy is under threat in parts of West Africa, stressing the importance of the rule of law, electoral accountability, and civic engagement.
Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to regional diplomacy through ECOWAS, highlighted the country’s legacy in defending democracy, and praised President Tinubu efforts toward economic and political stability, expressing optimism that such actions would lead to shared prosperity.
