Northern Elders Urge Tinubu to Declare State of Emergency on Insecurity

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has asked President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in the North, citing rising killings, kidnappings, and widespread violence that have left communities devastated.

Spokesperson Prof. Abubakar Jiddere said the security system is overstretched and failing, warning that citizens may resort to self-help if urgent action is not taken.

The Forum referenced recent attacks in Zamfara, Kaduna, and Plateau that claimed dozens of lives and called for a comprehensive response, including stronger security deployment, rehabilitation for victims, tighter border control, and international support. It cautioned that continued government inaction could amount to crimes against humanity under international law.
