The National Universities Commission (NUC) denied reports of uncovering 100 fake professors in some Nigerian universities. Contrary to media claims, the NUC clarified that it initiated a verification process in 2019 but did not release a list of fake professors in 2024. The commission identified anomalies during the exercise, such as Associate Professors being listed as full Professors. Emphasizing its responsible approach, the NUC shared collated data with universities for authentication, aiming to ensure the accuracy of the information. Some universities, including the University of Ibadan, University of Ilorin, Babcock University, and Covenant University, have issued rebuttals amid concerns about the qualifications of academics in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
