Sudan’s Prime Minister, Dr. Kamil El-Tayib Idris, has ordered the reopening of universities in Khartoum, instructing the Ministry of Higher Education to assess damages and begin necessary repairs to institutions impacted by the ongoing conflict.
He also directed the National Center for Curricula and Educational Research to incorporate peacebuilding, unity, and anti-hate speech content into academic programs.
Though no reopening date was announced, the directive signals a step toward restoring Sudan’s education sector, which has been devastated by the war that began in April 2023.
The conflict has displaced around 13 million people and caused widespread atrocities, with the U.N. warning that parts of the country are now in famine.
